American Youth Football (AYF) vs. Pop Warner
by posted 02/01/2011

What is the difference between AYF and Pop Warner?

All leagues have a place in San Diego and we welcome the diversity. Each program caters to different types of athletes at different stages of their development. In our community baseball, basketball, soccer, and lacrosse have grown to include travel teams, and this growth has improved the quality of all programs. It’s time football offers the same choices to our young athletes and if you believe your child should play against the best football players in San Diego County in order to bring out the best in your child’s development, then playing with the CV Dons will provide your child with that opportunity.

San Diego Youth Football has been coined by high school coaches as “the toughest football in San Diego County where the best athletes play youth football”.  In Fact, San Diego Youth Football Conference is ranked as the 2nd Toughest Youth Football Conference in the United States.  In 2011, football teams from our conference went to Nationals and placed 1st in the 8th Grade Division, 2nd in the 6thGrade Division, and our 8th Grade All Star team placed 3rd. To be the best, you must challenge yourself and play against the best.

There are many unique qualities that make AYF a top ranked and highly competitive youth football program.

  • The entire coaching staff is required to attend training each year.
  • Our head coaches have complete control over their team in working with the goals and policies of the Dons Board of Directors.
  • Our divisions our grade based, catering to larger players that will most likely move into high school and college football.
  • We don’t offer older but lighter (OLB) players.  OBLs are older kids who weigh less than their peer group, but are more mature and physically stronger than their younger peers (for example a 6th grader playing down with 4th or 5th graders).  OBLs are more dangerous than younger kids who are heavier as they are usually quicker, faster, and intellectually more advanced than a younger player.  To truly test your child’s skills and abilities, players need to compete with their peers at age and grade appropriate levels.
  • We do NOT hold evaluations and we do NOT allow one team to draft first. Drafting this way is disruptive to teams and favors only one coach in a division.
  • Tracking with your team is highly encouraged. It is the parent's option to track with their team each year and not the boards. Our philosophy is to create a team and community environment that a player and family can grow with during their entire time in our league.
  • Players purchase their own helmet and shoulder pads and are not required to wear old, used equipment.  The league will provide helmets and shoulder pads for all players in the Mitey Mite Division (8 and 9 year olds) as this division is purely developmental and an introduction to tackle football.
  • Our registration fees are very low. All surpluses are returned back to the entire league.
  • Our focus is to create tomorrow's high school football players.
  • We have developmental "Spring Tackle 8-Man Football" programs designed to prepare our players for the fall season.
  • The level of competition at Division 1 is much different than other leagues and not suited for all athletes.

We recommend that you understand these differences before deciding to register with this league.
